Verify Active RunwaysIdentify surface runways: brown, grassless streaks on a lawn, created when moles tunnel below. Carefully poke a hole in the top of the surface runway with your index finger. Be sure to not collapse the pile or cover up the hole. Mark the hole with a small stick. Repeat with several runway locations. Wait 48 - 72 hours and then check holes to see if they have been sealed. If they have, they are active and can be baited. Runways that have had holes resealed within 72 hours should be baited. |
Bait Active RunwaysBait only active runways. Poke a hole 3 to 5 feet on either side of the assessment hole and place one worm bait down each hole. Push the worm as far down as you can. Make sure each worm is sitting on the floor of the runway. Reseal the runway with dirt to keep out any light and pinch hole closed or cover it with a piece of sod or small rock. |
Determine Baiting ResultsWait 5 to 7 days, then check for mole activity using the same process in Step 2. If the holes stay open for 48 - 72 hours, the mole has likely traveled the runway and eaten the bait. |
Mole Detection
A clue that you might have a mole problem is your lawn will look like raised, brown, grassless streaks which are created when moles tunnel below. The other thing to look for are "mole hills" which are seen above ground and are created when the mole pushes soil and debris to the surface.

UPDATE 2015 -- After two full years of use, I'm ready to give away our traps. These mole killing worms work great! The secret is to use a dowel or something similar to poke a hole in the mole's run, not in the middle of a mound. Wear gloves, drop the worm in, cover the hole and you're done. So's the mole. I usually cut the worms into two pieces and put one piece on each side of a mole mound.
FIRST REVIEW -- We've had more moles than usual this year (2014) on our five-acre rural property. I don't like using traps, because most require large holes in the lawn and the smaller type haven't worked for me. A shotgun has taken out six of the critters this year, but that takes a lot of time as I have to be there when the moles are pushing up dirt. When a friend said Tomcat's poison worms have done the trick for him, I ordered two boxes. In the first two weeks after putting out several of the expensive gummy worms, it seemed that they were acting like energy food. The moles pushed up holes all over the place. Then things settled down and there's only an occasional mound, none in our lawn. Truth is, however, that it's impossible to know if 95-degree heat or the worms have caused the slow-down in activity. Until we use the worms for a full spring-fall mole season, I'll give Tomcat a neutral 2.5 stars and the shotgun a solid 4.

However, I only used 1/2 worms not whole ones. They took it every time. The first day after feeding the moles, I found one barely alive up on the ground (surface). I felt sorry for it and placed it gently back into the tunnel, NOT! It was crushed immediately.
After the first feeding, there was no activity for a few days, but some are coming around again so I will be back out there soon with these delicious treats for them.
I also used the smoke bombs, but they did not seem as effective. That was probably because you need to treat the area near the den. How the heck to you know where THAT is?
